Creating a Virtual Hard Disk on Windows 7
We are ging to see how to create a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) in Windows 7
- Start the Computer Management (start -> Run -> compmgmt.msc)
- Right Click on the Disk Managment
- Select the Create VHD on the list
- You will prompt a dialog box
- In the location text box you can browse and give a place to save the VHD file with any name (Ex:- C:\myhard.vhd )
- Under the Virtual Hard disk Size specify the size for your VHD
- Under the virtual Hard disk format you have two options
- Dynamicaly expanding and Fixed size
- In this case select the fixed size
- Click OK
- Now if you go to the place you save the VHD file you can confirm the creation (C:\myhard.vhd)
- Now go to the disk management in the Computer management
- you can see your new disk with unalocated space (with lifght blue icone)
- Now you can Right click on the left side of the disk and select initialize Disk
- when you Initialize it you have two options as
- MBR and GPT
- In this case select the MBR
- Then Right click on the unalocated space and select Create a simple volume
- You will get a dialog box
- in this step specify the details like size ,Drive ltter,File system and finaly Format it
- after finish these steps you can go Computer and see the disk you created as a normal Disk Drive
- You can use it to store data also to install another operating system even.
